Owls

Owls are being in the world for 70 to 80 million years and its name derived from the Greek word “tuto”. Owls are living in deserts and rocky areas, which made its nest in the holes of trees in barns on the ground.

Facts about Owls

  1. More than 227 owl species in the universe.
  2. European Engle owl is the largest owl in the world. They are 75 centimeter long.
  3. Owls have the capability to shift its color of eyes for hunting in different time.
  4. In day time if owls start to hunt, their eyes color turn into yellow and at night their eyes color turn into dark color.
  5. The smallest species of owl is Elf owl, which is 11 -13 cm long.
  6. Owls hold an ability to fly without making any sound by its wings.
  7. Like a human, owl’s eyes are straight forward.
  8. Owls cannot able to see at night without light as human.
  9. They can able to turn their head up to 270 degrees.
  10. This species has three eyelids. They are top lid, bottom lid and third transparent membrane.
  11. Owls have amazing sensitive hearing, which helps to locate the target.
  12. The ears of owls are set at the edge of the facial disc, which have many short stiff feathers.
  13. Owls lay 5 to 6 eggs and they stay in eggs for 2- 4 days.
  14. Eggs hatch within 31 – 32 days and both parents gives food to young one.
  15. Young owl can fly and hunt itself within 7 to 12 weeks.
  16. They can able make different sounds.
  17. Except Antarctica all other continents owls are present.
  18. They have powerful talons, which helps to catch its prey.
  19. They hunt insects, small mammals and other small birds. Some species hunt fish too.
  20. Barn owls face is heart shaped, they looks different from other species.
